Janice Tjen Makes History, Advances to US Open 2025 Main Draw
ESSENSI.CO – Indonesian rising star Janice Tjen has made history by securing a spot in the US Open 2025 main draw after defeating Japan’s Aoi Ito in the final round of qualifying on Friday (Aug 22) evening local time.
Competing at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, Janice dominated from the start and needed only 49 minutes to seal a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over the third seed of the qualifying bracket. Her stats were outstanding: four aces, four winners, zero unforced errors, and five out of six break points saved, with an impressive 83 percent efficiency rate.
The win was even more remarkable given that Ito had been in top form, having recently defeated world top-10 players Jasmine Paolini and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in WTA 1000 tournaments at Montreal and Cincinnati. With this triumph, Janice ended Indonesia’s 21-year wait for a women’s singles representative at a Grand Slam since Angelique Widjaja last played at the 2004 US Open.
Prior to New York, Janice showcased her consistency on the U.S. circuit, finishing as runner-up at ITF W75 Lexington and ITF W100 Landisville, as well as reaching the quarterfinals at ITF W100 Evansville. These achievements added to her stellar season, which included two ITF W35 titles in South Korea, four consecutive singles crowns, three doubles titles, and back-to-back honors as ITF Player of the Month in May and June.
Janice also earned a bronze medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games in women’s doubles with Aldila Sutjiadi, making this US Open breakthrough the highest point of her career so far.
